The Beauty of Aviation Photography
I am an eager aviation enthusiast with an interest in photography and fulfil a niche form of photography, but I think, one of the most underrated. It involves photographing the very best of human ingenuity and engineering to take to the skies and travel to the other side of the world in less than a day… something that still fascinates me to this day.
My beginnings in aviation photography coincided with the creation of an Instagram page back in 2015, which over the years has grown more than I ever thought it would and continues to month by month. This exposed me to the aviation community in my home city of Manchester but also the UK and far beyond. Meeting people through this channel has helped and inspired me to improve my skills and understanding of photography and has led me to enter an ever-evolving cycle of improvement and experimentation. The growth and success of my social media following on Instagram and Twitter has also helped me to undertake amazing opportunities affiliated with Manchester Airport, Airbus UK and Thomas Cook Airlines. The photographs shared on my social media platforms have allowed me to document my journey over the past 5 years and share my passion with the world.
Aviation has been a part of my life since I was young, having the privilege to travel to many parts of the world with my family including South East Asia, the Middle East, the US and Europe. The notion of travel and aircraft has been a pillar of my past but also, all going to plan, my future too with my ambition of becoming a commercial airline pilot.
This niche type of photography doesn’t come without its challenges. Putting the early mornings and trekking through ankle deep mud aside, the skill in getting the perfect shot is one that has taken me a long time to master, and something that I’m still learning about. The requirement of shooting a fast-moving, large object in all lighting scenarios requires the right settings and a steady hand. Unlike most other forms of photography, this one is unique in that there is only one chance to get the right shot! Editing is also another challenge in that you want to do what you can to enhance the image, without overdoing it and ruining it – getting this balance takes time to perfect, but is also down to personal preference. Editing images fresh off the SD card, especially after a rare catch or following an airport event showcasing a new airline for the airport is one of my favourite aspects of the hobby.
The biggest thing for me though, is that over the five years I’ve been running my social media pages, I’ve met some amazing people with the same interests and people I regard as life-long friends as well as contacts within the aviation industry. The opportunities that have sparked from this are also next to none and I’ve embarked on experiences that I never thought I would such as a visit up the Manchester Air Traffic Control tower as well as a number of opportunities to go onto the ramp and take photos airside during airline events at Manchester Airport.
Below are some of my favourite images I've taken over the years!
